The “best” maternity swimsuits is really up to whoever is wearing it. But when shopping for a swimsuit while pregnant or postpartum, there are a few things you can keep in mind—including fit, bra size, and practicality.

Fit

“Fit” is a vague, but extremely important aspect to consider when shopping for a swimsuit while pregnant. For one person, it may be all about finding a swimsuit made with super stretchy material, while for someone else it may mean buying a bathing suit that offers light compression for a supportive feel.

“If you have something that doesn’t have any kind of stretch to it or stability, it makes it really difficult for it to fit throughout your entire pregnancy,” says Gabrielle Carrington, a product developer at Kindred Bravely. So, shop accordingly.

If you’re down to buy another swimsuit at a later point in your pregnancy, focus on something that fits you right now. If not, shop for something very stretchy that will see you through the finish line.

Bra Size

As is the case with any bathing suit whether you’re pregnant or not, you’ll also want to consider your desired level of bust support and coverage. Bra size is an extremely important factor when shopping for a maternity swimsuit.

Carrington and Akerson both recommend staying away from underwire of any kind in swimsuits while pregnant to accommodate future breast growth. Additionally, you should also consider if the swimsuit has straps. If it does, always go for straps that are easily adjustable, and if you know your breasts will grow significantly, avoid halter styles.

Practicality

Life may feel a little more uncomfortable when you’re pregnant, so you want to go with a swimsuit option that isn’t too hard to take on or off.

For after your pregnancy, you should also consider avoiding styles that have buttons or small decorations that your baby might take interest in, as these can present a hazard, says Jenivive Bernbeck, a technical designer at Kindred Bravely.

That being said, when you’re shopping, you may also want to keep future nursing sessions in mind. For that, look for tops that easily pull down or have a clip on-and-off strap. Whatever you need, be sure you go for a maternity style you feel confident in (and don’t forget your sunscreen.).
